Arrival in Roncevalles Monastery
2018From France to Spain through the Pyrenees. The day starts in Saint Jean Pied de Port. After more than 25 kilometers, especially climbing, the monastery of Roncevalles looms after the summit in the distance. Dutch volunteers greet and receive the tired pilgrims in the albergue.
Alto de Mostelares
2018The descent of the Alto de Mostelares, after Castrojeritz, on the way to the flat Meseta is impressive. I stood still for half an hour and waited for the fog to rise. In the spring, the grain fields are still green. Pilgrims arriving in the summer see a golden-yellow plain

2018At the beginning of April it is still winter in the Pyrenees. In the Rioja region it is already spring.

2018The travel guide has warned that it will be hot om the Meseta. The first day in May starts cold and foggy. Frost is on the plants. Don’t trust travel guides.

2018The drizzling rain lasts all day. The view is limited. Yet we continue.
